How to: Bobble Stitch

The bobble stitch is an awesome way to decorate your garment. Plus, it is super easy and can be either knitted or crocheted!

How to Crochet Bobbles

On the wrong side (ws) of the garment, crochet up to the point you wish to make the bobble.

Yarn over and  insert your hook into the next stitch as if to double crochet. Yarn over again, and pull it through the stitch.

Now, yarn over again and pull through two loops but don't finish the dc stitch!

Repeat the almost-double crochet three more times. You will have five loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull it through all five loops. You have just made the bobble stitch! Crochet as you normally would, separating the bobbles by at least one stitch.

How to Knit Bobbles
Note: knitted bobbles are knitted on the right side (rs) of the garment.

Knit up to the point where you wish to make your bobble.

Knit into the front and back of the stitch on your left-hand needle twice (that's four stitches).

Then, knit into the front again and pull the stitch off of your left-hand needle. You will now have five stitches on your right-hand needle.

Turn the work and purl the five stitches.

Turn the work again and knit the five stitches; turn, purl across the five; turn, and knit across the five one more time (whew, that's a lot!!).

Your work will now look like this.

Slip the second stitch over the first stitch four times and you have completed one bobble!

Knit like you normally would and, after a few rows, your work will look like this.
